Segment 1:
Technology and Health Care

Today, health care spending in the U.S. is currently almost 17% of GDP and expected by 2017 to rise to almost 20% of GDP, higher than any other developed nation. Controlling health care costs is clearly at the heart of everyone's agenda, but the billion or perhaps trillion dollar question is how do we best do that? Is new technology helping us reduce health care costs or causing us to continue to increase these costs? And what areas in medicine have the greatest potential for improving clinical outcomes while at the same time bringing down costs?

Guest:
Michael Cima, Material Science Professor at MIT and Faculty Director of the Lemelson-MIT Program

Professor Cima is the author or co-author of over one hundred and ninety scientific publications and forty-five patents. He is also the co-founder of 4 companies in the health technology field and is actively involved in materials and engineered systems for improvements in human health such as treatments for cancer, metabolic diseases, trauma and urological disorders. He received a BS in Chemistry in 1982 and a PhD in Chemical Engineering in 1986 both from the University of California at Berkeley.
